Lumber Buying at Kuiken Brothers – In Search of Premium Lumber

Jim and Calvin from Kuiken Brothers Purchasing Dept
Kuiken Brothers utilizes a centralized purchasing department for many of the products stocked at our nine locations. The purchasing department is based in Midland Park, NJ and is managed by Calvin Wahl (right). One of the largest categories purchased by the department is lumber (dimensional, plywood, engineered). Jim Wagner (left) is Kuiken Brothers main lumber buyer.

“I enjoy the industry,” said Wagner. “It’s challenging, though. Lumber is a true commodity that trades on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Price goes up and down. Sometimes it can be very volatile. Even though we are buying premium lumber, we are still able to keep our pricing to our customers competitive because of the overall volume.”

How does Jim Wagner add value to your business?

Kuiken Brothers Lumber – Direct From the Mill

 KB Lumber
Kuiken Brothers Company currently operates five locations with rail siding which provides us with direct access to West Coast Lumber mills. We have contracted with the premier lumber mills in North America to ensure a consistent supply of “premium” lumber.  Each year we receive and unload well over 500 rail cars loaded with an assortment of plywood, OSB, studs, pre-cuts and dimension lumber shipped to us directly from the lumber mills.  Because the amount of material in each rail car is equivalent to approximately 3 fully loaded tractor trailers, we are able to reduce truck traffic on our local roads by more than 1,500 throughout the year.
