Classical Moulding South Boston Installation with Nick Schiffer of NS Builders - Kuiken Brothers Moulding Collection

Kuiken Brothers Classical Moulding is featured in the latest episode of the Site Visit*, hosted and created by Nick Schiffer, NS Builders. Nick chose a few of the clean and historically accurate profiles from our Classical Moulding Collection (Casing KB117 (1-1/2″ x 5-1/2″) and Base KB227 (3/4″ x 7-1/2″). All of these profiles are from our in-stock poplar collection and are milled from finger-joint poplar. Nick discusses some of the benefits of finger-joint poplar, including stability (doesn’t tend to twist/ bow like solid sawn poplar).

Have you ever installed a full house of trim only to deal with the wood shrinking and cracking later on? Check out this episode where Nick is talking about the steps his team takes to help prevent issues with their trim packages, including priming the walls and using a back primed moulding to help prevent moisture intrusion from the plaster walls which could potentially create grain raise.

He also talks about about the trim package they’re using from Kuiken Brothers Classic Moulding collection, including the benefits from a technical side of things. According to Nick, “The reason we chose this big hefty profile (KB117) is because this is a pretty traditional house and there are some big casing on the lower levels and this profiles provides us with a more transitional design detail with the square edges and angles with a traditional beaded edge on the jamb side of the casing.”

The KB227 (3/4″ x 7-1/2″) base moulding is featured in this project. Nick talks about his thought process as to whether or not they chose to install the baseboard before or after the flooring is installed. What do you think he chose? You’ll have to watch this episode of Site Visit to find out!

About Kuiken Brothers Classical Moulding Collection

Kuiken Brothers’ profiles are categorized by architectural style (Early American, Georgian, Federal, Greek Revival, Colonial Revival, and Traditional Revival) to show which crown, casing and base mouldings go together. In the past, coordinating design elements was difficult and time-consuming and many of these profiles were available only through custom production runs. Kuiken Brothers offers free moulding samples so potential buyers can match them to existing mouldings or see how they will actually look before installation. CAD files are offered on-line for architects and designers to incorporate detail to their blueprints.
