Video: How To Build a Panel/ Beam Ceiling with Stock Moulding from Kuiken Brothers Classical Moulding Collection

Finish Carpenter Gary Striegler teamed up with Kuiken Brothers to use profiles from our Classical Moulding Collection to create an unbelievably simple, yet well thought out “coffered”/ panel beam ceiling detail. While panel/ beam ceiling and coffered ceilings can set a trim carpenter apart from the competition, it can also be incredibly labor intensive.  With so many different parts and pieces, these detailed millwork installations have an increased risk of movement and separation, which may result in call backs. Gary addresses a number of those areas and offers some tips that will greatly mitigate that risk, and also showcases a number of time saving techniques which will hopefully lead you to a more profitable, and enjoyable installation.

One important thing to note about this project is that it was located in Little Rock, Arkansas. We pulled all of these profiles from our stock moulding collection and shipped them directly to Gary at his jobsite. Any of the profiles with the “KB” in their name from our full line moulding collection can be shipped anywhere within the United States.

Gary shows how to make pre-fabricated panels on your workbench so that you are working for the majority of time in a comfortable position, and not staring up at the ceiling.

The KB242 panel moulding profiles are used throughout this ceiling detail. Although small, we mill these profiles from poplar because these small details are critical to maintaining a classical look and feel. Every incision creates a shadow line and our goal is to ensure that it is purposeful and meaningful.

Another intricate panel detail, the KB654, is used to create an applied moulding detail to the secondary beams. Once again, these delicate pieces are pre-fabricated on the floor and then installed on the ceiling, which reduces the time working upside down.

The KB319 bed moulding is used throughout to tie all of the beams and wall beam details together.

Here is a look at the finished, painted ceiling.
