PORTICO COMPOSITE DECKING
The Formula: Many composites are made from recycled plastics and a mixture of wood and rag fibers. Over time, lesser quality products can break down. Not Portico. Portico is made from a tested formula furniture quality maple wood flour encapsulated in strong 100% virgin High Density Polyethelyne.
The Ingredients: Maple wood flour is low in tannins. This premium ingredient means no stains, like those from oak fillers, and that means fewer call backs.
The Product: The best ingredients equal the best products. The result is a more natural looking, consistent, and higher quality product than other composites using recycled materials and lesser quality wood flour.

MERANTI (Mahogany)
We used to call Meranti “Mahogany” because of its similar look. There are many different Mahogany-like woods out on the market and quite often other lumberyards will refer to them as simply “Mahogany” even though the product is not that species (not that there is any true mahogany on the market to buy). We were requested by our distributor to start referring to this as Meranti due to some confusion they had that caused them some problems, and we complied.
INSTALLATION TIPS - MERANTI VENTILATION
As far as using Meranti as a decking product, ventilation is the key element to keeping it in good shape. Meranti decking should not be used in applications where the deck is less than 3 feet off the ground. The bottom of the deck should never be boxed in; only lattice should be used to allow for the free flow of air beneath the deck. Deck boards should be spaced ¼” to allow for expansion because as the product is kiln dried which means Meranti is not going to shrink very much, but will swell when out in the elements.
Meranti should always be face screwed using stainless steel fasteners and you should NEVER use any hidden fastening system with Meranti. It is recommended that an initial finish be applied to all surfaces of the boards, even if the intention is to let the Meranti turn silver-gray. To keep the initial color of the Meranti, the homeowner will need to re-apply this finish annually. We can recommend the Penofin for hardwoods as the appropriate finish for this product. Penofin is also stocked at Kuiken Brothers.
