Are you tired of using the same old mouldings? Do you feel like your designs could use a little creativity? Have you ever walked into a room in an old house and it just felt right? Well there is a reason why the builders and designers back 150 to 200 years ago understood this idea of classical proportions and classical design. Have you ever heard of the Golden Rectangle? This idea of perfect proportions? Well if you understood the idea, you know that it could change the way you use mouldings and how you design a room. Come to the Kuiken brothers Product Expo on November 4th at the Sheraton Crossroads in Mahwah, NJ where Brent will be teaching classes on historical design and classical mouldings.

Here is a list and summary of the classes held at the Product Expo on November 4th.

Historic Millwork
11:15am - 12:15pm & 5:00pm - 6:00pm

A popular talk given at Preservation and Restoration conferences across the country. Using many colorful and interesting pictures from historic millwork catalogs (many over 100 years old) this talk provides grounding in molding styles, interior design and historic interiors. This talk covers the period 1725-1950 and discusses how technology and styles work to create distinctive moldings and millwork. Other topics touched on include; classicism and classical design, specifying moldings and the proper use of moldings today.

The Master Builder! Being a Master in a Modern World
1:00pm - 2:00pm

A fun and engaging talk that uncovers why new houses are ugly, why old house are charming and how to build houses that make sense. While craftsmanship may be dead, it is going to require design skills and new skills to succeed as a contractor going forward. Discover do's and don'ts in residential design. The ultimate goal of this topic is to encourage builders to focus on design as a tool for winning new work and gaining a competitive advantage.

Historic Interiors
3:00pm - 4:00pm

Based on research from historic trade catalogs and period books, this talk lays out interiors and rooms and how they were designed, built and installed. Classical design is reviewed and how to lay out a proper architectural interior. Dealing mainly with the architectural side of interiors, this talk deals with the proper use of molding and architectural design by period for different rooms of the house. Gain a clear view of historic interiors; how they are put together and how they can help with design today.
