Learn how Engineered Wood Products are manufactured and how the code approval process for wood I-joists and LVL beams works; Become familiar with the installation details for I-joists; Learn how to use design tools to properly size I-joists and LVL beams; Learn the environmental benefits of using wood as a building material.

This will be a discussion of what the codes are for coastal and flood prone regions as witnessed with the recent Super Storm Sandy. Focus will be on foundation construction but will also include corrosion and continuous load path construction.

Presented by Andersen Windows & Doors
This course examines unique requirements for hurricane prone coastal regions. This course will review issues with design pressure and wind-borne debris requirements. We examine the building code requirements and testing standards. We will walk through an example of determining wind load requirements under the International Residential Code.

This will be a discussion of what the codes are and products that can be used in high wind regions. The program will include review of Simpson's Wood Frame Construction Manual Supplement and the new High Wind Catalog.

2:15pm - Building Envelope Technologies for Energy Efficient Designs (1 CEH SD)
Presented by Huber Engineered Wood Products
An overview of present Energy Conservation Codes and Standards with emphasis on those sections affecting building envelope performance. Specific focus will be placed on air barrier technologies and components including a review of traditional methods/ shortcomings and how air leakage affects thermal performance in typical wood-framed construction. Study will primarily focus on wall applications examining two approaches to improve energy efficiency and also introduce and compare three alternative product solutions to improve the building envelope.

Windows In Sustainable Design (1 CEH/LU HSW/SD)

This presentation addresses the role of windows in commercial and residential building energy performance, and window integration with key sustainable design strategies. Categories common in sustainable building rating systems are identified and contribution of windows defined. Third party certification of window performance, materials and environmental quality characteristics to support sustainable design is outlined.

Wood Acetylation: Offering a Non-toxic Path to Preserve Wood (1 CEH/ LU)
3:00pm - 4:00pm

Presented by Paul Murphy, Boston Cedar & Perennial Wood

This course will provide learners with a knowledge of wood acetylation and an understanding of the numerous benefits of acetylated wood products. This course will look at long-lasting performance benefits as well as how acetylated wood is a sustainable product that has been modified through a process that leaves no toxic substances in the wood. We will look at how the modified wood has improved dimensional stability over unmodified wood while maintaining the versatility and workability of wood.

Additionally, participants who are builders, trades people, designers, and architects may see a potential maintenance-cost savings for their clients and an environmental impact reduction because of the low maintenance requirements and improved durability of acetylated wood products.

Commercial Building Design - Comfortable Environments through Sustainable Design (1 CEH/LU HSW/SD)
4:30pm - 5:30pm

Presented by Lucas Hamilton, Certainteed Corporation

A program that provides an overview of comfortable environments through sustainable design in commercial Building Science. After completing this course you will be able to understand the concepts of green building through sustainable design; describe the three principles of sustainable design; understand credit categories for a green building raiting system, describe several factors affecting thermal comfort; understand ways to improve indoor air quality through controlled ventilation and material selection; understand how to create superior acoustical environments through sound control design practices; understand design strategies that help create a high quality visual environment.

This FREE half day workshop will focus on the structural code requirements for building an outdoor wood deck and are designed for Building Officials, Contractors, Architects and Residential Deck Designers.
