Kuiken Brothers Company Inc. Lumber - Building Materials - Millwork - Kitchens - Since 1912

1921 to 1931 – Our First Lumberyard

Our First Lumberyard

By 1921, Nicholas A., Dirk A., and Henry A. began a lumberyard and opened a mill on the southwest corner of First Street, machining lumber and building windows, doors, and other millwork. April 5, 1924, the Borough of Fair Lawn was incorporated. The Kuiken Brothers Company is now recognized as the oldest company in Fair Lawn.

Nicholas A. served as mayor for two terms. In 1929 he founded and became President of the Fair Lawn Radburn Trust Company, which later merged with the National Community Bank (now The Bank of New York). Nicholas A. was also one of the founders of the Fair Lawn Building and Loan Association, which became Columbia Savings and Loan Association (now Columbia Bank), which began in an old schoolhouse.

By 1931, with assets approaching $100,000, the Association’s continued growth prompted a move into The Kuiken Brothers Company office on First Street.
